We broke news earlier about Facebook’s new Google Labs like feature called “Facebook Prototypes”. Not an hour later, Facebook has now officially announced the new feature at TechCrunch 50 and via a blog post.

There are a number of Facebook Applications already available in the Prototypes Section, three of which we mentioned in the previous post, along with others including:

Recent Comments Filter, which allows you to sort your News Feed by items on which your friends have recently commented (similar to how Friendfeed currently works) and Photo Tag Search, which enables you to find photos by the people who are tagged in them.

Facebook notes:

“Prototypes are exactly that — unfinished versions of products we’re testing that may have some kinks to work out. Some Prototypes may eventually launch to everyone on Facebook and become part of the Facebook experience, while others may eventually be removed from the Prototypes directory all together.”

To gain access to Prototype Applications, visit the Facebook Applications Directory then filter by Prototypes.
