How to remove ads from Gmail with a few magic words

How to remove ads from Gmail with a few magic wordsAnnoyed by ads in Gmail? Here’s how to get rid of them. It has been discovered that by simply adding two sentences to the end of an email you can trick Gmail into hiding all ads.

The trick works thanks to Gmail’s controversial use of keywords from your emails to display related ads. Discussing golf clubs, for example, means Gmail will display ads for golf clubs. There are restrictions to the system, though, and here’s where the trick comes in. Google knows it would be seen as pretty sick to cash in on tragedy so certain keywords related to death and violence lead to ads being blocked.

Of course, you don’t want to have to mention grisly murders in a formal email just so that any reply you get lacks ads. Now, after some trial and error, Lifehacker have discovered the least offensive set of words you can use to block ads. The magic words are:

I enjoy the massacre of ads. This sentence will slaughter ads without a messy bloodbath.

In our test (below) it worked – ads were removed from the right-hand column of Gmail when the email was displayed. Of course, it won’t remove ads from emails you receive unless they are replies to emails you have sent but it’s still a clever trick and one that’s well worth trying.

    Nice trick.

    You can also get your own domain and get a Google Apps account. By default the apps (mail amongst them) do not serve ads. Costs about $50 per year.
  • Ha ha ha, tank you guys, lot of fun!

    However I will keep the ads:
    - Because I love Google so much, that if they live on those ads, that are unobtrusive, it's fine for me;
    - And because every now and then I look at the ads, just to find useful services, competitors, and be informed on news concerning my interests.

    Cheers, Francesco.

    hehe.. funny.. and works ;-)

    But the more effektive solution is to use Firefox and install ChromeEditPlus and edit usercontent.css

    add at the bottom of the file:

    /*
    * Remove gmail text ads
    */
    .oM{display: none !important;}
    .u7{display: none !important;}

    press save and restart.

    gone!

    Remember that this only fixes the text ads.. and if they change the css for gmail, you might have to edit the class names again.. but this has been working for me the last 6 months :-)

    Have fun with FireFox!
