Gmail now lets you automatically unsubscribe from mailing lists

Pestered by emailing lists that are difficult to unsubscribe from and given up on creating filters for all of them? Gmail now lets you automatically unsubscribe by marking the message as spam AND sends an unsubscribe request on your behalf.

Gmail now lets you automatically unsubscribe from mailing lists

According to Gmail’s help pages “You’ll see the unsubscribe tool when you mark a message from particular types of mailing lists as spam. If the particular message is a misuse of a mailing list you like to receive, you can Report spam as usual. But if you never want to receive another message or newsletter from that list again, click Unsubscribe instead. We’ll send a request to the sender that your email address be removed from the list. It’s that simple!”

Lets hope its that simple…

  • Hmm, doesn't seem to work that well for me. I have yet to discover that popup box.
  • Never worked for me :/ Will hit SPAM button more often since now on :)
  • this is silly and lazy on the part of the user, and I think Google is doing a disservice to the email marketing community.

If you receive spam, report it as spam. But if you want to opt-out of newsletters you obviously signed up for at some point in your life, or were signed up by another party whose email policy (that you didn't read) allowed them to share your address. Be courteous to the ESP community and find the unsubscribe button. Don't report it as spam because you don't like a newsletter anymore.

As someone on both sides of the playing field I can say that the unsubscribe button works, and taking an extra minute to call out a marketer who's not using responsible marketing practices is also very effective. I've whittled my way down to 1-2 unsolicited emails per day when a year ago I used to get 100-200.

You assume the unsubscribe button works. I am stuck on at least 3 lists I have unsubscribed from at least 4 times in the last year and they still send me things. Then there are the unsubscribe buttons that send you to dead pages, also a nice touch.

  • How about no unsubscribe button at all. Not everybody has discovered MailChimp yet.

Not all of the unsubscribe buttons work, but I agree trying it is a matter of respect and honestity.
It´s important to note that some unsubscribe services take a few days for work - you get a warning on this.

Usually I try unsubscribe button two or three times before marking it as spam.
  • didnt see it yet. used to use window mail to receive gmail
  • In response to 'stephan'. Still seems a lot of marketers don't quite understand how important the unsubscribe button/link is.

So many times I've tried to unsubscribe, yet faced with so many clicks to get myself off the list.

If marketers/emails don't provide me with a one click unsubscribe, I report them as spam. Simple. I'll give you my time to subscribe but I wont when I wont out.

    Make is easier!
  • ...and then smetimes you have to wait 3 days to be removed from thge mailinglist, as if they have to ask to the cleaning lady to go trough a punched card and removed manually users from Microsoft Access...

People abuse Permission Marking without understanding what is the value of Permission....

    Well done GMail.
  • People gain access to more power everyday, Internet marketers and others who don't respect it, are hating Gmail's new feature! I love it, thanks for sharing :-)
  • I have nothing good to say for Gmail except you need it for other Google accounts like Adsense and Blogspot.

Of course, the greatest offenders don't use a valid return address nor put a live link in the unsubscribe text.

Most companies that can't get their mail through private ISPs or places like MSN and Yahoo, advice you to use Gmail - that's how poor the spam control is there.

So anything they do in making it easier to unsubscribe from these obnoxious mailers is welcome with arms.

Maybe I should pay a visit to my gmail box - last visit I had 40,000 unsolicited messages in my inbox and spam - so I walked away.

houseofmax: You must live in a parallel universe as I don't have 1 spam message in my account.

Stephan: "...I think Google is doing a disservice to the email marketing community."

Um, f#ck the marketing community. If those messages are still wanted, they will be allowed through.
  • How the hell do i unsubscribe
