Loic admittied now something many others already knew: online video conversation will always remain a niche for the reasons you specified here.
Just look at Techcrunch blog...how many video comments or responses you see there? There were some at the beginning of Seesmic...then almost nothing (despite Techcrunch heavily promoting Seesmic).

But at least Loic tried, saw it doesn't go anywhere and now it changes the direction. Take some guts to do that and congrats for his sincerity!
Some people are beating a dead horse until it really dies...

The question: "can seesmic make a profit" is actually three questions.
a. Can it generate revenue?
b. Can it generate profit from that revenue?
c. Can it generate such profit that the ROI of the cash invested is not negligible?
In my opinion, if it can generate revenue, with sound management, it can generate profit too. But I doubt that this kind of business will ever make a reasonable ROI for the VCs.

Can a company, building an app over other social networks, make profit ? As long as, their product is a free distributed version, I can hardly see how they would monetize it. Even an ad-support option is not reliable enough to get them enough income to make it profitable, despite mainstream adoption.

They will need to find a solid rock business model that would allow them to get stable recurring revenues. Branding the application is one way of doing it.

So far, Seesmic desktop is a way for Seesmic to have a recognized brand in order to support their future developments. They are creating a consistent user base to which they will be able to push future services, whether these are built around Seesmic desktop or another service. But in order to make profit, they will certainly have to derive from the current model and find a true way to make money.
