The S in iPhone 3G S might actually stand for ‘Sealed’ instead of ‘Speed’. Or maybe it is the oleophobic coating that makes it waterproof? Anyway, the new iPhone seems water resistant up to one meter under water. Don’t believe me? Check out the video:
UPDATE: According to CultOFMac “This iPhone had a rubbery condom cover on, which probably helped it survive the dip in the pool.”.

At some other website I heard the ‘S’ might stand for ‘Submarine’ ;)
Could be. I just don’t think the movie is that unrealistic.
I can imagine it takes a few seconds before water starts seeping into the the interior of the iPhone. Unlike other phones where the keyboard is the gateway to the inner, and very un-waterproof, parts of the phone.
Why can’t it just be real?
Good point. Still, there are LOTS of reports of people dropping their iPhones in water (toilets being a favorite) and then simply drying them without damage.
I think that video is fake. You don’t actualy see that it is an iPhone. And if it’s an iPhone It could be prepared for the dive with something water resistant.
I think water would instantly enter the iPhone through the headphone jack, the microphone and the usb-connector.
*If* this video is real, the iPhone may have worked during the few seconds it took the water to completely wreck the phone.
This guy is a lying butt who works for nerd competition
Hrmm, I won’t be trying this with my iPhone any time soon, regardless of whether the video is fake or not! haha
It could easily be filmed with a waterproof camera like an Olympus MJU.
Boris if you want it to be real, check out Skins Mobile, it’s pretty cheap and simple to make a waterproof phone with them.
My brother says it’ a fake! :P
Placement* sorry for the bad spelling.
From the placmet of the camera I think it may be an iPhone but you can ship them off and get em waterproofed for around one hundred bucks.
Scumdog do you care to give a name as to where one might send their phone? Given that I’m sitting in my bathtub keeping warm while the powers out it suddenly feels very relevant.-a
right.. its all very easy to test this solution. just buy an iphone, drop it into a pool of water for more than 1 minute and see what happens.
I had mine in the washing mashine forgotten in a pocket of jeans and fully recovered within a few days
I still can’t believe it
Unconvinced? try salt water. fresh water is a little forgiving due to the fact its not the best at conducting electricity to the extent it will destroy an electronic device at a rapid rate. But salt water will destroy your iphone in less than seconds. I should know. One beautiful surfing session and one unrepairable iphone equals one neutral day.
if fell into a water fountain and my iphone 3gs was in my jeans pocket. it was totally submerged for at least 2-3 seconds. i testes ted thphone and at first the speaker didnt didnt work but after a few hours it dried up and phone was working back to normal.
i wouldnt doubt if this video is real
heheh bump, very old news this i know but just wanted to point something out to the author
‘oleophobic glass’ is glass with an antifingerprint material, GLASS, with a antifingerprint material
GLASS.
the charge port and headphone jacks being seperately sealed from the internals is a valid reason for it to be waterproof, not glass, glass is always waterproof.
