Google’s product management director, Matthew Glotzbach, announced yesterday that Google would be integrating on the fly language translation into Gmail as early as this week.
He announced the update during his keynote address at the CeBit conference and exhibition in Sydney on Tuesday.
Via one click, Gmail will automatically detect the original language and translate the email ‘inline’ into your specified language.
There were rumours that translation would be launched early in May commemorating the 5th anniversary of GMail, but that wasn’t to be.
With any luck, the translation service should be made available to both Gmail and Google Apps as early as Wednesday.

Oh god. Not another “translation” tool that doesn’t work and proliferates the idea that professional translators aren’t actually needed and a few lines of code will work just as well. The parsers used for automatic translators work by rules and looking up dictionaries. When was the last time you saw two languages that had no exceptions to any rules, no ambiguity, and absolutely no homonyms? Not to mention the same figures of speech and cultural influences?
That is the only place automated translation COULD work, and there are no languages like that. Hence the gobbledegook that often comes out of Babelfish.
I agree with Vixter. Machine translation is still far from being good (not to say “perfect”). Human translators are needed and will be needed in the future. If you want to translate emails for *REAL* purposes you should use one of the fast translator services such as one-hour-translation or SDL’s trados

This translation service for gmail is good idea and I don’t know why it was not implimented sooner. Unfortunately as the other commenters mentioned mechanical translation is not perfect, far from it but I am confident it will get better over the next few years.
