It would come as no surprise to me if 1 in 10 iPhone users had broken their iPhones by slamming them against walls after it’s auto-correct dictionary kept suggesting the wrong words. Whether that is the case or not, who knows, however with thanks to Ars Technica the way for the iPhone to actually learn the way you type is via one application, Safari (on your iPhone).
To do so, you’ll need to type into the ” google search” in Safari and ensure you correct the spelling of any words that the iPhone recommends to you. By doing so, you overwrite the iPhone’s auto-correct dictionary (located at /private/var/mobile/Library/Keyboard/dynamic-text.dat).
To summarize, not every application will “learn” words based on what you type – currently (according to Ars Technica) only Safari will.

I agree this is crap. There should be a built in app or a function in the Settings app that lets you manually add the words you want. Apple treats their users like children!
Sorry, doesn’t work.
Tried the word ‘The’ but it keeps making Captials (THE)
That sounds like you had already changed the autocorrect by typing it in caps once. If I were you, I'd try resetting the dictionary in Settings –> General –> Reset –> Reset Keyboard Dictionary. Hope that helps.
This is exactly what happened with me. I couldn’t type the word “as” without it autocorrecting it to “A’s”. After reading this post I realized that I had in my contact list an entry of “A’s Mom” (for my wife Amanda’s mother). Removed this, and no more issues. Thanks!
My phone turns “id” into “ID” rather than “I'd” and this didn't work to fix it. Does anyone else have that problem? Is there any way to manually get into the dictionary to change two-letter words? It is so frustrating!
Oh my god thank you I have been living with the dumbest thing ever until just now
I added a contact to my address book whoose first name is ” The’ “. Once I entered her name in contacts, everytime I typed ” the ” (which of course is often), autocorrect changed “the” to ” The’ “. I tried everything mentioned to fix it and nothing worked until I removed the name from contacts. Actually i just removed the apostrophe after “The.” You might check to see if you have the offending word in contacts.
Agreed. I found the offending A’s in my contacts and I can now write as again in most apps. It’s still trying to change it to A’s in safari and mail but at least texting is better.
Thanks, but correct it HOW (after google search)?
Thanks for your help, but how do I correct in Safari (Google search) method?
Mine did not work. it turns my me into me’ .. Any suggestions?
Mine turns me into me’ and it didn’t fix it when I tried the surfari trick
Brilliant. Thanks, that has worked a treat!
I had the same problem with me turning into me’. But, when I clicked in the google search bubble at the top of the page and put in me, I just hit the x to close the suggestion bubble and then hit search. It seems to have fixed it for now!
my problem is that “as” turns into “a’s”… which means nothing. i probably said “a’s” one time and “as” 923847 times.
this is what i did.
i went to notes, made a new note, and typed as and before i clicked space, i clicked the X each time. i did it 4 times, and on the 5th time, it did it right!
then i went to text, but it didnt work. so i went to a texting conversation i already had going and i did the same thing and on the fifth time, it worked. and yeah it keeps working so… try thatttt cause i tried tons of stuff before and it didnt work but this finally does.
None of the above strategies has taught my iPhone its “its”. Typed it half a dozen times in Safari’s Google search and 30 times in a text message, but it tries to substitute the contraction every damn time. L2PossessivePronoun, Apple!
The issue with it’s is that it’s usually the more common construction.
From day 1, however, (without any interference from contacts) it corrects ‘t’was to tWas. What does that even mean?
