The very first thing that come to my mind when i saw chrome logo was exactly that. the second thing was “pokeball”. The third was the joining of the two: Windows Flag Pokeball.

if you look at the Google logo the whole idea of the styling of it to be familiar. the 4 colors in the letters are the same as Windows and are commonly used in other things. also note that the shading and shine of the letter are the same opacity as the Windows logo, and so is the shading (originally used by windows).
with the chrome logo i see a more moving away from this and creating there own identity with the more shiny look and the better 3D effect, this is something that the windows logo completely lacks.
what you see in many designs of logos is that there heavily influenced by what is already on the market. i think here the case is the same.

I hesitate to use even upgraded versions of Chrome, since my last experience using it (first version) left my computer compromised; have they fixed the security issues beyond all doubt?
