Twitter is trialing ad units on users’ profiles pages in a new experiment, reports Recode.
The new test sees promoted tweets being added to streams on users’ pages. They are separated from traditional tweets by breaks and include a ‘Suggested by Twitter’ label.
At present, the ads appear only to users who are logged in. That’s probably because it allows Twitter to target ads based on users’ interests.
Displaying these ads to users who aren’t logged in might also make sense at some point — the company says it has over 500 million visitors per month who don’t have an account or choose not to log in. Twitter recently partnered with Google to display tweets in search results, and could look into gathering search data to target ads to logged out users.
As with Twitter’s other experiment, the ads are currently live on Web and mobile only for select users.
