We Are Hunted joins Twitter, shuttering its own service to help the social giant go music

We Are Hunted just confirmed that it has joined Twitter and will shutter its music discovery service. The company says it will “continue to create services that will delight you” at Twitter, but it said it wasn’t ready to show what it has been working on.

The announcement comes minutes after celebrity Ryan Seacrest appeared to confirm the existence of a Twitter music app. It’s worth noting that his tweet was retweeted by the official Twitter Music account. Seacrest went on to say that the app shows trending and up and coming artists.

CNET reported last month that Twitter had acquired We Are Hunted in preparation for a music service, but neither company had yet to publicly announce the move. The upcoming music service is expected to arrive as an iOS app with following sections: Suggested Music, a #NowPlaying section that tracks the hashtag among followers, Popular and Emerging.

As part of the move, existing We Are Hunted accounts will be shut down, but users can submit their email address or usernames to download their favorites. We Are Hunted was founded in Australia in 2007 by Stephen Phillips and Richard Slatter, with Michael Doherty as a founding partner.

When contacted for comment, Twitter referred back to the statement We Are Hunted published on its website:

The last few years have been an incredible experience made possible by the various staff, contractors and partners we’ve worked with. We would like to thank our board and investors, particularly Graeme Wood, who backed us in late 2007 and never stopped supporting and mentoring us. A huge thanks also to our users, who kept coming back each day to discover the great new music.

While we are shutting down wearehunted.com, we will continue to create services that will delight you, as part of the Twitter team.

There’s no question that Twitter and music go well together. Artists turn to Twitter first to connect with fans, and people share and discover new songs and albums every day. We can’t wait to share what we’ve been working on at Twitter.

What are you working on at Twitter?

We wish we could say but we’re not yet ready to talk about it. You’ll hear more from us when we are.

What will happen to my We Are Hunted account?

We are shutting down wearehunted.com, so your account will be shut down as well.
