Bezant

Bezant is a medieval term for a gold coin from the Byzantine Empire. The term is derived from the Greek name Βυζάντιον (Byzántion), the relatively minor city which in the 4th c. was refounded as Constantinople by the Roman Emperor Constantine the Great and became the capital of the Eastern Roman Empire. The Byzantine Empire was a major source of gold coins since the time of Constantine.
