Yahoo’s new tablet-optimized email app and iPhone weather app are now live

Yahoo’s new tablet-optimized email app and iPhone weather app are now live

Marissa Mayer seems to have breathed new life into Yahoo since she upped sticks from Google and jumped on board as its new CEO last summer.

Indeed, while it may no longer be known for its search engine, it has made new inroads as an online media company, and it still claims a hell of a lot of Yahoo Mail users, particularly in the US.

With that in mind, Yahoo has rolled out a couple of new apps today – Yahoo Mail for iPad and Android and a brand spanking new Yahoo Weather app for iPhone and iPod touch.

Yahoo Mail

Yahoo’s existing Mail app was previously optimized for the smaller-screened form factors of the iPhone, iPod touch and Android smartphones, so users of Apple’s omnipresent tablet (those with a Yahoo email address, at least) and Android tablets will be delighted with the new incarnation.

As you’d expect from any tablet-optimized app, Yahoo Mail has a full-screen ‘reading mode’, meaning you can use the device’s full real estate when reading emails or viewing photos. One tap, and you’re there.

You can also scroll through email messages like turning the pages of a book – no need to exit back to your main inbox (via the gift shop).

For Android, iPhone and iPad users, there’s a new ‘Starred’ folder too, which centralizes all those messages you want to revisit for whatever reason. Android tablet users can now access an advanced ‘triage’ feature to manage their inbox quicker.

Oh, and according to the release notes, there’s also now extended support for Romanian, Thai, Indonesian, Vietnamese, Dutch, Swedish and Greek too on the updated iOS version.

Yahoo Weather

The Yahoo Weather app for iOS is a bit of a treat too, and is in addition to the existing Weather app for Android.

It taps Flickr (owned by Yahoo) to bring beautiful images to your weather forecasts – ones that reflect the actual weather conditions outside.

Users can submit their own weather-related snaps to the Project Weather Group and you can maybe see your handiwork appear next time it’s peeing down in Paris.

To glean a full-screen view of the image, just tilt your device, or see it on Flickr tap on the photographer’s name that’s appended to each snap.

A couple of nice developments for sure, and you can download them both from the App Store now.
