WordPress.com, the host of endless blogs, is rolling out new features to their hordes of users to make blogging more social. The company is introducing the ability to like and reblog posts inside of the WordPress.com domain.
The new WordPress.com like however, is not the Facebook like, it is a separate entity. To some, this is a godsend. If you are logged into WordPress.com and view a blog post on another blog that is part of the network, you will note a new button on your admin bar: the like button. Click it to mark that you find the post top-notch.
The fun does not stop there, once you have liked the post, you can reblog it to the readers of your own blog. Of course, you could have always done this yourself by copying and pasting text, parsing through links that needed to be replaced, and then properly sourcing the original article, but that is quite time-consuming. The new WordPress.com reblogging feature makes that process much simpler.
By clicking on ‘Reblog this post,’ WordPress.com will pull up their Quickpress system and automatically generate a miniature blog post for you that is designed to give credit where it is due. The new post will include a piece of the original text, and links back to the blog and specific post. It is a simple way to move things that you find to be well crafted to your audience with little hassle.
A hat tip to WordPress.com for building a simple system to pass content around with little friction, and fair sourcing. If only the splogs of the internet were so kind. WordPress.com of course caters to perhaps a slightly less technologically savvy audience than use self-hosted WordPress, but the company does well by providing powerful capabilities that are hardly simplistic.
Blogging may have lost some of its sheen in the media’s eye, but it is a crucial component of today’s internet. WordPress.com is fighting for it to stay relevant to the small-time writer and reader alike.
