Mozilla has just announced that it has been working on an iPhone app that brings all your desktop Firefox settings on to the iPhone.
Using Firefox Sync (formerly Weave Sync) technology, the free app called “Firefox Home” gives iPhone users instant access to their “Firefox browsing history, bookmarks and the set of tabs from their most recent browser session”. All these will then presumably be made available to Safari users on the iPhone although it would still require users to open up the app before opening the browser – a pretty significant step.
In a blog post, Mozilla says:
“the app is for devices or platforms where we’re unable to provide the “full” Firefox browser (either technically or due to policy), we aim to provide users with “on the go” instant access to their personal Firefox history, bookmarks and open tabs on their iPhones, giving them another reason to keep loving Firefox on their desktops.”
It sounds as though Mozilla has accepted the fact that it’s unlikely to ever find a browser of its own on the iPhone. With a successful attempt from Opera with Opera Mini (despite Apple classing it is as pornographic) you would imagine Mozilla at least attempting to bring a version of Firefox on to the iPhone. Seemingly not.
An early sneak peek demo of the app be found in the video below. Still early days though it appears.
