Why your product demo needs to be weird

Why your product demo needs to be weird

You’re a brand. You make cool things. And those cool things deserve to be shown off in a non-blasé way, right? You know it. Video has proven itself time and time again as a powerful way to showcase products and catch people’s attention in awesome and creative ways. Recently, we posted tips on how to create killer product videos — videos that explain what your product is and why people need it.

Today, we’re going to talk about elements of cool product demo, or videos that show off the functional and/or aesthetic elements of your product. From heading out into the great outdoors to making musical instruments out of razor blades, scroll on for more ways to showcase your stuff via video.

1) Unveil your product with a twist

Though it’s tempting to spend a whole video talking about your product, sometimes it’s more effective to create a little suspense. We won’t spoil the ending and tell you what product this exorcism-themed video is for, but let’s just say the ending is totally worth the wait:

2) Feature your product in its natural environment

Poler Outdoor Stuff commissions “adventures,” in which they team up with photographers and other cool people to show their products in the wild in a way that feels natural to both the brand and the people who actually use their gear:

3) Or, take it out of context

Gillette is famous for making razors, but instead of filming the act of shaving, they chose to highlight their flagship product in a more melodical and memorable way:

4) Tell a familiar story in a new way

Free People gives the classic Cinderella story a 21st-century twist with this all-too-adorable product demo, proving that sometimes, the best stories are the ones we already know and love:

5) Show the parts, not just the whole

Be it high-quality parts or fresh ingredients, showcase all the tiny details that make up your product. Sepai, a luxury skincare line, does a gorgeous job of conveying the nature and science behind each of their products:

6) Show ‘em how it’s done

People love seeing how things are made. Instead of focusing on the finished product, show customers how much care goes into creating your product. Gayubotakes you on their jewelry journey all the way from ideation to creation:

The next time you set out to make a video for your products, we hope you’ll consider the examples above and show them a little extra love and creativity — after all, a little weird can go a long way.
