Wave Trip: A musical iOS game inspired by traditional MIDI sequencers

Wave Trip, built by Scottish creative studio Lucky Frame, is an experimental game that combines Whale Trail and Tiny Wings-like gameplay with highly catchy, generative music. As the Creative Applications blog points out, the game hails from the same talent that brought us Pugs Luv Beats, which we called “one of the weirdest iOS games we’ve ever encountered.”

In Wave Trip, each level in the app functions just like a song, and as you play, your actions (like racking up coins and avoiding enemies) generate your soundtrack.

The results are equal parts captivating and peculiar, as the $1.99 game follows the travels of a “mysterious and wonderful geometric astronaut” as she moves “through worlds of unimaginable beauty and danger, saving her friends through the medium of awesome tunes.”

Beyond the game’s built-in challenges is a level-creator, which lets users create their own songs. As we’ve mentioned, the interface reveals how closely music is tied to the game, drawing heavy inspiration from the layout of MIDI sequencers.
