Virgin Media to test world’s fastest cable broadband at London’s Silicon Roundabout

Leading UK internet service provider Virgin Media has today announced it is to begin testing new cable broadband connections that will support speeds of up to 1.5Gb, choosing to partner with four companies in and around Old Street, an area you might recognise as London’s Silicon Roundabout.

The four companies will be able to enjoy 1.5Gb download and 150Mb upload speeds, which will be served via Virgin Media’s existing cable infrastructure and technology. If the service runs as planned, it will be more than 240 times faster than the average broadband connection in the UK, potentially downloading 1Gb of data in one second.

The service has been made possible by the company’s £13 billion investment into its infrastructure with it hoped that the new service will be able to usher in a new wave of interactive entertainment services. This in turn would provide residential and business properties with the resources to take advantage of data intensive communication protocols and remote working.

Virgin Media operates independently of its rival BT, offering its own services in a large portion of the UK. With BT installing its on fibre network, British residents are will soon be able to enjoy the same speeds as residents in the Far East, which are already enjoying 1Gb connections in every home.
