Virgin Media plans new iOS app for UK TV subscribers, with video-on-demand, TiVo control and more

Virgin Media plans new iOS app for UK TV subscribers, with video-on-demand, TiVo control and more

TV service subscribers in the UK are increasingly being encouraged to use iPhones and iPads to augment their viewing experience. Following the recent launch of an updated Sky+ app, Virgin Media has revealed plans for a similar offering to tie in with its TiVo boxes.

What HiFi got the exclusive on news of the app, called TV Anywhere, which looks set to combine video-on-demand and the ability to view live TV feeds with PVR management. According to the report, you’ll be able to “browse the EPG, manage your recordings and change channels without affecting the image on your TV screen.”

Yes, it seems that as well as using the app as a remote control, you’ll be able to pop some headphones in and watch something good on another channel via your iOS device while the rest of the family laughs away at the terrible game show you detest on the main TV. Available channels will vary depending on the subscription package you have, and it appears that all Virgin Media TV customers will get the viewing options, but remote control functions will be limited to TiVo users.

The app, and an accompanying website offering similar features, will be available during autumn 2012, with an Android app planned for early 2013. The service builds upon the existing Virgin Media TV Guide app, which lets users view details of upcoming shows and program recordings on TiVo boxes.

Rival Sky already offers similar features to those available in TV Anywhere, although they’re split over two separate apps, Sky+ and Sky Go.
