Vimeo is letting Vimeo Pro subscribers upload their videos in 4K quality from today. The ultra high-definition videos won’t be available to stream yet but video creators with the $200 Pro subscription can make them available for download as a free or paid option.

Vimeo’s decision to support 4K content follows in the footsteps of Netflix, YouTube and Amazon Prime, all of which have added the option this year. It’s still a niche proposition as you need a 4K TV to benefit from the increased quality.

Vimeo trialled 4K downloads with Video Game High School Season 3 and A Film About Coffee in its VOD store.

Previously Vimeo transcoded 4K uploads to lower quality. It’s planning to add 4K streaming in the future but you’ll have to be happy with huge files to download in the meantime.
