Vimeo acquires Cameo, a video recording, editing and sharing app for iPhone

Vimeo today announced it had acquired Cameo, an iPhone app for shooting, editing and sharing videos. The terms of the deal were not disclosed, but Vimeo says the team will continue to work on the Cameo app. It will not be shuttered, at least not for the forseeable future, and it will live alongside the Vimeo service and its dedicated mobile apps.

The Cameo team will now report to Andrew Pile, the chief technology officer for Vimeo, but they won’t be contributing to any Vimeo products. As part of the deal, the startup’s co-founder and chief executive Matthew Rosenberg will transition to a new position as vice president for Cameo.

Cameo differentiates from short-form video apps such as Vine and Instagram by offering a two-minute maximum sequence length. Individuals clips can only be six seconds long, but the app then lets you stitch them together into a short montage. When you’re finished, you can change the order of the clips add music and invite your friends to contribute with their own footage. There also ‘themes’ which build on a traditional filter with caption fonts, color tweaks and effects.

“Vimeo is committed to empowering all creators, and the ubiquity of HD camera phones is driving the largest wave of video creation ever seen,” Kerry Trainor, chief executive of Vimeo said. “What we love about Cameo is that it gives even novice video-makers the power to create beautiful, well-crafted videos.”
