Ultrakam 4K video app arrives for iPhone 6

Ultrakam 4K video app arrives for iPhone 6

Earlier this year, Ultrakam Apps launched a video shooter for Apple’s iPhone 5 series that was capable of recording 2K footage. Now, in the wake of the iPhone 6 and 6 Plus, the company today released a new app capable of shooting 4K resolution video.

In an effort to compete with the likes of the GoPro Hero4, the Sony F55 CineAlta 4K and other 4K video cameras, the new Ultrakam 4K app seeks to incorporate super high quality video into the smartphone you always have with you. Targeted to professional videographers, but easy enough to learn for videographers of all skill levels, the new Ultrakam 4K also has its own companion app to use as a remote video monitor to control the app’s production features.

“For me, Ultrakam 4K is how I really wanted to do the original Ultrakam, but previous hardware and software limitations didn’t allow it to be,” Hassan Uriostegui, Ultrakam’s developer told TNW. “We believe that with the newest iPhone 6 and 6 Plus hardware and iOS 8,  iPhoneography is receiving an amazing push forward to be a serious deal, given the advances both in image quality and disk storage.”

Ultrakam captures 4K video at 50MB/s, using the MJPEG codec to capture 8MP video at 3264 x 2448 pixels.

With Ultrakam, a 128GB iPhone can hold more than 30 minutes of 4K video at super high quality compared with eight minutes on an old iPhone 5S (32GB), Uriostegui said. That means longer sequences and more shots before having to transfer data.

With iOS 8’s new photo controls, users can manually adjust focus, shutter and ISO speed, while Ultrakam also offers capabilities such as time-lapse and up to 20x slow motion. While manual settings are a must for professional tools, it is a core feature for the Ultrakam 4K camera and remote control.

The remote control companion app, available for free, allows users to livestream the camera’s video to another iPhone via Bluetooth and Wi-Fi to control focus, exposure, white balance and more.

The app’s gallery and preview module allows you to edit recordings and export videos to the camera roll to optimize space and upload videos to a YouTube account with 4K quality.

Users can connect their iPhone to any computer and use the iExplorer desktop app to access all your video files. You can also use iTunes file sharing to access recordings on the Applications tab, or transfer video files within the app’s embedded Web server via a Wi-Fi connection to computers on the same network.

Want to view your video on an external monitor? Of course you do, and the app’s Airplay integration and HDMI output capabilities are there to accommodate you. To get a sense of what the app can produce, the company has posted some sample video output on its YouTube channel.
