Twitter reportedly chooses Berlin for its German HQ

According to a report from Focus today, Twitter has chosen Berlin as the location for its German HQ.

In January, the company’s Executive Chairman, Jack Dorsey said at the DLD conference in Munich that it was hiring in Germany. If true, the choice of Berlin is an endorsement of the city’s increasing profile as a technology hotspot. In recent years, the likes of SoundCloud, 6Wunderkinder and Amen have emerged from Berlin as some of Europe’s most interesting and stylish startups.

Citing “industry sources,” Focus says that Twitter has already hired its German chief, and notes that other job vacancies in the country have disappeared from the company’s website. It says that ads for these vacancies had indicated that Twitter was considering Berlin, Hamburg or Munich as the location for its German HQ.

Twitter’s German presence will be its third in Europe, following the London and Dublin offices it has already opened. Berlin is an interesting choice, as while it’s the country’s capital city and undoubtedly a hub for startups, it’s not generally the first choice for international companies looking to move into Germany. Google, for example, is based in Munich.

The Focus report indicates that Twitter will use its new office to build relationships with sports clubs and other brands, following the common pattern of US tech companies basing the majority of their technical skills base in their home country and using satellite offices abroad largely for business development.
