Espial, a Canadian on-demand TV software and solutions company, has agreed to acquire Cambridge, UK-based ANT for approximately £5 million ($8 million) in cash.

ANT provides IP, hybrid and ‘connected TV’ products and services to television manufacturers, set-top box vendors, broadcasters and service providers. Its software notably features rich HTML5 user experiences across set-top boxes, tablets and smartphones.

Its customers include the likes of France Telecom, Samsung, Bouygues Telecom, Cisco, Telecom Italia and YouSee.

ANT is publicly listed on AIM, a London Stock Exchange regulated market, and a founding member of HbbTV, a European HTML5-based hybrid broadcast/broadband TV standard.

Espial, meanwhile, offers digital TV and IPTV software and solutions to cable and telecommunications operators as well as consumer electronics manufacturers. The company says over 10 million licenses of its software are in use across the world.

Its acquisition of ANT is expected to close in Q1 2013.
