The shrug emoticon ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ gets the emoji treatment in iOS 10.2

The shrug emoticon ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ gets the emoji treatment in iOS 10.2

The shrug emoticon is pulling a Pinocchio and becoming a real boy, err… girl. In iOS 10.2, we’ll see a host of new emoji (full list here), but the shrug is long overdue and easily the best of the bunch.

Although used interchangeably, emoticons and emoji are not the same thing. Emoticons are typographic representations that us old farts were forced to come up with before the graphic interpretation of them. We had clear cut favorites like:

¯\_(ツ)_/¯

(╯°□°)╯︵ ┻━┻

(ಠ_ಠ)

ლ(ಠ益ಠ)ლ

From top to bottom, we have typographic interpretations of the shrug, table flipping, the look of disapproval, and rage. If so inclined, you can use rage and table flipping in unison for increased emphasis.

Emoji, on the other hand, are the cute smiley figures you know and love. It’s the emoticon for the non-l33t so to speak. And in iOS 10.2, we’ll have dozens of new ones, like puke face, pregnant woman, bacon, face palm, and a few phallic replacements for the eggplant.
