While I was sadly unable to attend (traveling!) this year’s annual Shorty Awards — the leading ceremony honoring the top content producers on the social web — looked amazing! And thankfully, local startup tracx quantified the buzz around the night of the event including the awards, winners, nominations, and A-listers present for us all to enjoy.
This year saw a record 1.6 million tweet nominations, up from 50,000 nominations in 2009. The 4th annual Shorty Awards had a strong global presence with UK, Korea, Indonesia, and Australia leading the international tweets.
A few of the most buzzed about winners were Agnes Monica (singer of the year who received more social media buzz than Justin Bieber), Louise Macabitas (Real time Photo of the Year), Mayor Bloomberg (Foursquare Mayor of the Year), Walgreens (best use of Foursquare in a campaign), and Volkswagon for its Beetle Launch strategy by Edelman (Best use of the Twitter Ad Platform). The house was packed to capacity with 650 attendees and 30,000 people tuning in via LiveStream.
To cap the evening, Ricky Gervais received “Lifetime Achievement Award” as he’s become a Twitter Sensation often making the front page of reddit, which unfortunately was not a social network considered in awards category…maybe next year.
