Before I start the story, I need y’all to look at one picture. Ready?
This was a photo that went semi-viral from the Samsung blog, which depicts a man at lunch looking absolutely absurd in his Gear VR. The future is now.
Fast forward to today, you won’t just wear Gear VR on a nice date, you’ll wear it on a fast-moving vehicle designed to make you scream and hurl. Samsung and Six Flags have officially partnered up to offer Gear VR headsets to on roller coasters at select theme parks so riders can experience even more motion sickness sensory overload.
Note that this won’t be used at an indoor simulated roller coasters – the VR headset is meant to be worn during a live roller coaster (there’s a new harness that Six Flags says will help keep park attendees from getting rained on by loose phones) and immerses wearers into a world where they are co-piloting their own fighter jets to fend off attacking aliens. In another experience, riders assume the role of Superman’s sidekick and ride alongside him as he battles evil Lexbots across Metropolis.
Six Flags and Samsung will debut the VR roller coaster experiences at nine different locations across North America, starting next week and into the summer.
- Shock Wave at Six Flags Over Texas in Arlington, opening March 10 to Season Pass Holders as a special sneak preview
- Dare Devil Dive at Six Flags Over Georgia outside of Atlanta, opening March 12 to Season Pass Holders as a special sneak preview
- The New Revolution at Six Flags Magic Mountain near Los Angeles, opening March 26 to Season Pass Holders as a special sneak preview
- Ninja at Six Flags St. Louis in Eureka
- Steamin’ Demon at The Great Escape in Lake George, New York
- Goliath at La Ronde in Montreal.
- SUPERMAN Krypton Coaster at Six Flags Fiesta Texas in San Antonio
- SUPERMAN The Ride at Six Flags New England in Agawam, Massachusetts
- SUPERMAN Ride of Steel at Six Flags America in Upper Marlboro, Maryland.
If you think you already look silly in those souvenir photos from roller coaster rides, prepare to look even more ridiculous. And maybe start bringing a helmet to the parks, just to be sure.
