We all know that Square is one of the most well-known startups in Silicon Valley, but did you know that it’s using that “fame” to give back to the community? That’s right, the company that Jack Dorsey co-founded (no, not Twitter), has launched its first Code Camp contest designed to invest in, develop, and support women engineers.
Through Friday, November 2, Square will be accepting applications from interested and passionate women engineering students who have a desire to work in the technology industry. The company will pick fifteen of the applicants and fly them out to San Francisco to be a part of the three-day Code Camp where they’ll be mentored by folks at Square. Oh, and their trips are all paid for!
Once here, the students will engage in conversations and mentorships, get hands-on workshops with teams from around the country, attend Q&A sessions, and get tours around the Bay Area. Hopefully what this will result in is the potential for one of these women to create their own startup or work in a tech company and make a difference and change the world.
Jude Komuves, the company’s Vice President of People, says that there are “so many talented women across the country looking to develop their technical skills, meet new people with common interests and gain valuable startup experience.” For anyone interested in technology, the opportunity to be taught by engineers and leaders in one of the most-talked about companies today is probably a great thing. Komuves says that with this program, the company is able to “share our passion for engineering and designing beautiful products to revolutionize commerce.”
Square’s Code Camp will take place between January 9-12, 2013. It’s open to those age 18 and older and they must be enrolled in a university full-time pursing and a degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or something similar.
The deadline to apply is November 2, 2012 at 5:00pm Pacific.
