Square Cash for iOS now lets you pay nearby friends using Bluetooth Low Energy

Square Cash for iOS now lets you pay nearby friends using Bluetooth Low Energy

Square has updated its Cash payments app for iOS with the option to send or request money from nearby friends over Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE).

In the past, customers in the US had to initiate a transfer using an email or text message. The former initially felt antiquated, as it needed to copy in either cash@square.com or request@square.com to help the company process transactions. Now, users can see which of their friends are nearby and simply tap their picture or name to send a few bucks flying in their direction.

The app works within a 250 foot range and could prove useful when you’re hanging out with friends of friends, whose email addresses or phone numbers you might not know. The feature, which is only supported with iOS 8, also supports actionable notifications for quick transfer approvals and dismissals.
