Spotify has reportedly converted 12.5% of its 1.4m US users to paying subscribers

Spotify’s US launch has netted the online music sharing service 1.4 million US users since its launch last month, of which 175,000 are paying subscribers, reports All Things D. The 1.4 million-user figure comes from a source familiar with the company’s operations, not Spotify itself.

Less than a month after the service opened its doors here in the US it has also managed to impress 12.5% of those free-trial users enough to convert them to paying customers. This is shy of the 15% conversion rate that Spotify enjoys in Europe, where it has 1.5 million paying subscribers. US users have access to more music under the free trial terms than European users, which may contribute to less upgrades for those not interested in listening to Spotify on their mobile devices, a prime benefit of an upgrade.

Spotify also has several major competitors in the US, including Rhapsody and Rdio. Rdio just launched the iPad version of its app, bringing a change to the price that it charges for subscriptions in-app in order to comply with Apple’s new policies. Spotify has chosen to simply remove a link to purchasing an upgrade from inside its app.

Spotify currently offers three pricing plans, a limited free option, an upgraded Unlimited option that runs $4.99 a month and the Premium option, which adds mobile streaming, at the $9.99 price point.
