The Spirit Of Microsoft Courier Lives On

The Spirit Of Microsoft Courier Lives On

A few days back, much to the disappointment of several technology enthusiasts, Microsoft discontinued support for the Courier project.

In an interview to Fox Business News, Microsoft chairman Bill Gates reiterated Microsoft’s commitment to tablet computers, more specifically pen based tablet computers.

Bill Gates had the following to say about tablet computing:

“Microsoft has a lot of different tablet projects that we’re pursuing, we think that work with the pen that Microsoft pioneered will become a mainstream for students. It can give you a device that you can not only read, but also create documents at the same time.”

As I had pointed out earlier, dual screens and pen based input will differentiate any tablet from the several me-too iPad clones. iPad is more for content consumption, devices like the Courier will allow a more intuitive way of generating digital content. While all promo videos of the Courier showed fashion designers as the target audience, students are a huge customer base for such a device.
