speaktheweb3The UK continues to take a leading role in the continued evolution of events which take conversation beyond the web and out onto the streets, via the first ever Social Media Train and the Speak The Web tour which kicked off this week.

Adding a dash of rock’n’roll to a short series of web and development events, Speak The Web this week kicked off its tour of cities across northern Britain.

The small, initimate events are staged in the style of a gig with the aim of providing inspiring talks from a blend of new and experienced speakers.

Ticket prices are held low for the evening events, with the aim of raising enough to cover costs and the distribution of any surplus to local charities.

The current tour is a sell-out.  It kicked off on Sheffield on Monday 8th Feb and takes in Leeds, Manchester and Liverpool over the next two weeks.

Speak The Web has already attracted sponsorship from a wide range of digital organisations and looks set to inspire attendees with ‘headline’ sets from developers, entrepreneurs and innovators from all corners of the web.

The organisers see Speak The Web as a hybrid of traditional paid-for conferences and some of the more established grass-roots meet-ups which take place across the UK.

Each event aims to put the spotlight on local initiatives as well as providing up-to-the-minute discussion on industry trends from around the globe.

This week also sees the UK’s and possibly the world’s first Social Media Train leaving the platform for the very first time.
