Sony Ericsson offers free Box.net cloud storage to Xperia owners in UK

Sony Ericsson offers free Box.net cloud storage to Xperia owners in UK

Update at foot of post.

Good news if you’re a Sony Ericsson Xperia owner in the UK, the maker of your phone is now giving you 50GB of free online storage through the Box.net cloud service, according to a company announcement.

The deal, which is exclusive to Xperia owners, will provide plenty of space in which to stash music, photos, videos and any other multimedia or files that users can lay their hands on. Content stored on Box.net can be accessed from a range of different devices and locations saving the problem of ‘lost’ or mislaid files.

The storage is available “for life” and Xperia owners have until the end of next year to download the Box.net app (here) and register to get started.

The news is another welcomed announcement for Xperia owners who, Google confirmed, will get Android’s new Ice Cream Sandwich operating system by March next year, at the latest.

Cloud storage is set to become a hugely important battleground in the mobile industry in response to the growth in mobile platforms that are increasing used to access the Internet. Apple and Google are amongst the firms that are seeking to hire for a range of web-based software-related positions to build up their cloud services for consumers.

UPDATE: Sony Ericsson tells us that the promotion was announced prematurely and isn’t quite ready to go yet.

“On Monday afternoon, we mistakenly posted a promo offering Xperia(tm) owners 50GB of free storage via the Box for Android mobile app. While we’re really excited about working with Box down the road, this offer is not active today. We are in the midst of finalising the details of this promotion and are working to provide this offer very soon to all Xperia(tm) customers so stay tuned!”
