According to a posting on Reddit, someone has uploaded the full version of Tron Legacy up on YouTube, and, at least as of this writing, it’s still there.
This is hugely ironic considering that we can’t use 30 seconds of an obscure song from the 80’s in my YouTube mashup videos without getting the meaty fist of a record company clamped around my video serving up advertising. Seems like all of Google’s fancy content detection algorithms aren’t perfect yet.
Apparently the video was popularized when someone posted it up on Reddit, which is currently inaccessible as of this article. Since Amazon EC2, which Reddit uses for hosting, is down, we had to discover the video via it’s Buzzfeed entry, where it’s currently climbing the charts.
Writer and Twitter user Sizemore offers up some background on the upload.
Tron Legacy still up on YouTube 14hours after Reddit noticed it. First comment was left 2 days ago. Seems to have been uploaded on the 18th.
The video is available now in SD quality but the poster promises to have an HD version up soon. In another amusing note the poster has left this ironic message about fair use in the comments to the video.
Copyright Disclaimer Under Section 107 of the Copyright Act 1976, allowance is made for “fair use” for purposes such as criticism, comment, news reporting, teaching, scholarship, and research. Fair use is a use permitted by copyright statute that might otherwise be infringing. Non-profit, educational or personal use tips the balance in favor of fair use
UPDATED: aaaand its gone: “This video is no longer available because the YouTube account associated with this video has been terminated due to multiple or severe violations of YouTube’s Copyright Policy.”
