If you’ve just recovered from Social Media Week 2012’s events, then you’ll be glad to hear about the theme for 2013. Running from February 18 – 22, next year’s theme is Open and Connected: Principles for a Collaborative World.
As ever with Social Media Week, everyone is invited to submit event ideas and the host cities for February include Copenhagen, Doha, Lagos, Hamburg, Milan, Miami, New York, Paris, Singapore and Washington DC. So there should be plenty going on world-wide.
There have been countless methods for people to self-organise during disaster scenarios and even for protest pretty much since the Internet was an infant. This process was amplified in the 2000’s with the growth of social networks and the appearance of Twitter.
Toby Daniels, Founder and Executive Director of Social Media Week hope to highlight the ways in which people now leverage digital platforms. He says:
“In the wake of Super Storm Sandy we have witnessed first hand the power of social media in helping people to self-organize to support those most impacted by the disaster. As a society we are united, connected and able to prepare, react and respond to catastrophic disasters in ways that we would never have been able to before. We hope our unifying global theme will help us explore how we can further advance our understanding of social media’s role as a powerful and positive force in our lives.”
The theme will serve as a framework for those looking to plan something special for the week. The deadline for submissions is January 11, 2013. If you need a crib sheet, there is even a set of tips on the SMW2013 site entitled Principles for a Collaborative World which may provide food for thought.
