We first reported on location-based social networking app Clingle for its soft launch back in October, noting at the time:
“Like its high-profile competitors Foursquare and Gowalla, Clingle lets you check-in from various locations as you go about your daily life and share your activities with your friends on social networks. It also has some gaming elements in the form of points that you score and badges you can earn. Where it differs from the aforementioned services, however, is that it has several utility features that allow you to use it as more than just an entertainment app. For starters, you do not need to physically be at a location in order to interact with it within the app, thus allowing you to make use of its features at your own convenience.”
So, Clingle is a location-based app that lets you “cling” , by sending tips, messages, pictures, video and audio clips to your friends when you check-in to locations.
When it first launched, the app was iPhone only, and was available only in some locations in India, Singapore and in New York City. This was soon rectified when it was rolled out across the US and the UK in November, at which point it threw video check-ins into the mix too, before introducing a feature that let users send location-based gifts to other users.
MyCityWay, the company behind Clingle, quietly rolled the app out beyond the iPhone in November as it geared up for its full launch, introducing Android and BlackBerry apps and thus widening its potential user-base. And in its 2 full months since launch, the free app has notched up a pretty impressive 200,000 downloads.
Whilst it has only officially launched in the US, UK, India and Singapore so far, it is now preparing to start launching properly around the globe throughout 2012.
