Skype’s futuristic voice translator will soon be part of the main app

Skype’s automatic voice translation tool is one of those technologies that just makes you feel like you’re in the future, but having to download a separate app to use it is a little inconvenient.

That won’t be the case for long, however, as the Skype team today announced that it’s integrating the Translator platform right into the main desktop app for Windows. The team is aiming to begin rolling out translator by the end of this summer.

Last month, Skype removed the limited registration requirement so that anyone could try out the technology. The tool can translate voice conversations between English, Spanish, Italian and Mandarin speakers, as well as over 50 written languages.

Bringing the technology to its main app is the next logical move, and is also a sign Microsoft believes Translator works well enough to merit wider use. Of course, Windows comes first, but we expect it to roll out to all platforms in due time.
