Skype’s latest feature, called Mojis, is a new option that allows you to send quick clips of popular movies and TV shows to friends… with a twist.
The new Mojis will immediately make you think of GIFs — they basically serve the same purpose — but they’re really very short videos created exclusively for the service from popular content.
A new option that appears in the emoticon menu within Skype that allows you to send Moji to friends. Right now it’s broken up into categories for individual TV shows and movies — during a demo I saw Top Gear, Kermit the Frog and The Office clips available.
The cool part is each Moji can link directly back to the source, so you won’t be wondering where it came from.
If I send a Top Gear Moji to a friend, it’s shown next to a link to the episode or movie it’s pulled from, along with the copyright information for the show.
Skype says it partnered with Universal Studios, Disney Muppets, BBC and other studios to bring high-quality clips to the messaging service — there’s everything from Despicable Me to Pitch Perfect at launch, with more to be added in the future.
The update is available today for those using Skype on Windows, Mac, Android and iOS devices.
