Shazam nabs BBC’s ‘on-demand’ specialist Daniel Danker to lead product expansion

Shazam‘s ‘media engagement’ service is now used by more than 300 million people, and the company is getting ready to roll out completely revamped tablet applications in the coming weeks.

To streamline its offering and to assist with the company’s continuing push into the so-called (and hot) ‘second screen TV’ space, Shazam has hired Daniel Danker as its new Chief Product Officer.

A former director at Microsoft, Danker most recently served as the BBC’s General Manager of Programmes and On Demand.

Danker joined BBC in 2010 and was responsible for strategy and delivery of the media giant’s iPlayer, iPlayer Radio, and Red Button products.

In other words, he knows a thing or two about on-demand content; Danker also gets credited for having helped deliver the technology that powered the BBC’s online media experience for the London 2012 Olympics.

Shazam CEO, Andrew Fisher, commented on the new hire:

“Shazam is enjoying tremendous growth, including its successful expansion into television in the US, UK, Europe and Asia. With his unparalleled expertise in delivering some of the world’s leading digital experiences for consumers and broadcast partners, Daniel will significantly strengthen our leadership team.”

Shazam launches its ‘Shazam for TV’ service in 2011 in the US for advertising and select programmes, and has since expanded to include all programming across 160 channels. In the last year, Shazam for TV advertising was also launched in the UK, Western Europe and parts of Asia.

In addition to working on Shazam for TV, Danker will be responsible for app development for phones, tablets and other devices across all major platforms, as well as working with major social networks such as Facebook, Twitter and Google+, according to a press release.

Shazam is said to be gearing up for a potential IPO, and recently added serial entrepreneur Brent Hoberman to its board of directors.
