Shazam, the popular mobile music discovery company, has announced that it now boasts over 100 million users, reaching the milestone after its user base welcomed 25 million additional users in just six months.
Shazam has cemented its position as the premiere music discovery service, offering tools to find out the name of specific tracks and the artists that produced them. Shazam’s platform has evolved over the years, initially available via a shortcode service in the UK where users could dial a four-digit number and hold up their mobile phone to a music source, evolving to a number of apps across different smartphone platforms.
In October 2009, we brought you the news that the service had eclipsed the 50 million user mark, securing funding from investors Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers (“KPCB”) also. The intention behind the investment was to grow the service in specific regions including North America, at the time the app was available in 150 countries.
In August of this year we reported that Shazam was adding users at a rate of 1 million per week, we speculated that with Android, iPhone, BlackBerry, Windows Mobile and Nokia apps available, Shazam’s rate of growth would help the company eclipse 100 million users by the end of the year.
Shazam’s growth continued unabated and the service did go on to pass that milestone, with users in 200 countries and apps available in 30 languages.
Shazam’s future plans sees the company moving into the TV market, helping US networks including NBC Universal and HBO to deliver rich content during advertisements or at specific points of a television show. When viewers see a Shazam logo on the screen, they can use the Shazam applications to access special programming content, buy products or take advantage of different promotions.
The company now has offices in London, Palo Alto, New York and Seoul, its quite clear the company has no intention of resting on its laurels.
