Samsung’s first WP7 Mango handset potentially revealed

Samsung’s first WP7 Mango handset potentially revealed

Get ready for a let down, ladies and gentlemen, and behold the likely name of a coming Manoged Windows Phone 7 handset: The Omnia W.

Yes, the Omnia 7, a forgettable phone, is with all but near certainty set to be replaced by the Omnia W. Aside from the operating system shift, we doubt that you would notice the changeover much, which is disappointing, as every WP7 fan is hoping for exciting new hardware, and not simply refreshed handsets.

Here are the specifications on the Omnia W:

  • 1GHz processor
  • 512MB of RAM
  • 5MP camera
  • 3.7-inch WVGA screen
  • GPS
  • Bluetooth

Does that sound familiar? It should. Here are the numbers on the Omnia 7:

  • 1GHz processor
  • 5MP camera
  • 4 inch Super AMOLED
  • GPS
  • 512 MB of RAM
  • Bluetooth

So yes, a smaller screen. Samsung, it appears, is content to tweak its hardware and do little more. Perhaps the Focus will receive a larger facelift. Mango, of course, is designed to run on the same hardware as earlier versions of Windows Phone (it does not need more processing power, etc), but we were still expecting more.

Why? Because while the software of Windows Phone generally receives marks of approval, the hardware that has run on thus far has constantly been marked as dull. It could be that for Windows Phone to have a strong holiday season, new hardware that will capture the public eye is needed. The Omnia W, providing that what we now know is correct, will not fill that role.
