Rovio’s 3D Angry Birds movie will have cost more than $160m by the time it lands next year

Remember 2009? A time when all anyone could play or talk about seemed to be Angry Birds? Well, it’s not 2009 any more and the company’s financial position isn’t faring quite as healthily as it was back then, which is why it’s hoping its upcoming Angry Birds movie will help put it back on track to mega-profits.

However, given the huge amount of time in bringing the movie to market – it was first announced back in 2012 and won’t arrive until summer next year – I’m not convinced it’ll be the mega-hit that Rovio and Sony Entertainment’s Columbia Pictures hope.

Add waning interest in the brand – operating profit fell by more than €26.5 million over the last year according to Reuters – to a reported $160 million minimum spend on production and marketing for the movie and the chances of it succeeding as a runaway hit must be diminishing.

Making it in 3D must also have seemed like a good idea back in 2012. Now, less so.
