Report: The CIA has been trying to hack into the iPhone for years

The ongoing Edward Snowden revelations just keep making it clear that the US government wants access to absolutely every means of communication.

The Intercept reports that the CIA has been on a long-term mission to hack into the firmware of Apple products and boasts that it has created a modified version of Apple’s development tool, Xcode.

The documents leaked to The Intercept by Snowden include information about a secret annual CIA meeting called the “jamboree.” The meetings have taken place for nearly a decade and in addition to CIA operatives, is attended by NSA personnel.

While the leaked documents never show that Apple hardware has been compromised, the modified version of Xcode, if used by an app developer, would allow the CIA access to that app’s information.
