ReplayLastGoal lets you relive the agony and ecstasy of the World Cup in GIFs

ReplayLastGoal lets you relive the agony and ecstasy of the World Cup in GIFs

As the planet takes a collective break to watch the World Cup, there is one certainty, we want to see the latest goals over and over again. Fortunately, there’s a Twitter account for that.

@ReplayLastGoal is an automated Twitter account that grabs video of the last goal scored during the month-long sporting event, creates a GIF of that video and posts it. The tweet also contains a link to the original video source. The video is available for viewing for an hour before it’s pulled. The GIF on the other hand doesn’t disappear.

The video probably disappears because of copyright concerns. Each video is accompanied by the following Fair Use statement:

Copyright Disclaimer Under Section 107 of the Copyright Act 1976, allowance is made for “fair use” for purposes such as criticism, comment, news reporting, teaching, scholarship, and research. Fair use is a use permitted by copyright statute that might otherwise be infringing. Non-profit, educational or personal use tips the balance in favor of fair use.

The open-source automated service works by connecting to a user-provided video stream. When a goal is scored and then tweeted by up-to-the-minute goal-tweeting account @GoalFlash, the automated service grabs the last minute of video, creates a short GIF and tweets both pieces of media out. Because of Twitter’s recent “GIF support” the GIFs are actually tiny video files.

But hey, goooaaaaaaaallllll!

You can participate in, and tweak, the goal-GIF creating service by visiting the GitHub.
