Verizon’s Redbox Instant launches in private beta: Unlimited streaming, 4 DVD credits a month

Verizon’s Redbox Instant launches in private beta: Unlimited streaming, 4 DVD credits a month

Update: Redbox Instant will launch to the public before the end of March.

Redbox Instant by Verizon, a joint venture between Redbox and Verizon Communications, is now gradually rolling out to users in private beta after being teased earlier this month. The service offers unlimited streaming movies, plus 4 DVD credits and includes a free, one month trial.

Redbox Instant is launching at an $8 per-month subscription price, in direct competition with Netflix’s streaming services. Its unclear as to how many streaming deals have already been secured by Redbox, but we do know that titles from EPIX will be included.

As we’ve previously detailed, Redbox Instant will be available online via your browser, as well as on iOS, Android, Samsung Blu-ray Players and TVs with SmartHub, LG Smart TV and Google TV. Additional devices will be announced over time.

Helping to differentiate its service, Redbox Instant is launching exclusively with streaming movies, while Netflix also offers TV shows. This could help Redbox expand its movie catalog more quickly, but may also let it serve as a companion service to Netflix, instead of forcing consumers to choose between the two.

According to the company’s goofy promotional video (above), users may also be able to buy videos — possibly in their digital form — in addition to streaming and renting them.
