Razer confirms Ouya acquisition in a move to strengthen its Android TV gaming

Struggling gaming startup Ouya found itself in desperate need of a buyer a few months ago, and now it’s found one: Razer.

The deal closed back on June 12, and it was Razer’s first-ever acquisition.  Razer is primarily interested in Ouya’s software assets to cement itself as a leading platform for Android TV gaming. As part of the move, Ouya’s technical and developer relations teams are joining Razer.

That also implies Razer isn’t buying out Ouya’s hardware business, meaning the tiny Kickstarter-funded console is waiting on an uncertain feature.

Razer has this to say about existing Ouya consoles:

In the near future, Razer will be providing existing OUYA users with a clear path of migration to the more advanced Forge TV micro-console and Serval controller bundle. Razer’s intention is to allow OUYA users to bring their games, controllers, and accounts to the Cortex TV platform on the Forge micro-console, advancing the experience of Android gaming on TV that they have previously enjoyed.

In other words, it looks like support for the existing Ouya console will soon be out the window. Still, at least the company intend to soften the blow by planning ‘deep discounts’ on Razer hardware for current Ouya gamers.

Meanwhile, the Ouya Store will be relaunched as ‘Cortex for Android TV,’ an extension of Razer’s Cortex gaming platform for the PC, and a new hub for Razer’s own Forge TV console.
