Augmented reality game Pokémon GO will have you scouring your city for monsters

Niantic Labs has revealed details about its upcoming augmented reality game, Pokémon GO, which it first announced in September 2015.

Based on the wildly popular Japanese franchise and developed in collaboration with Nintendo, the title will see players explore their real-world surroundings to find and catch Pokémon.

You’ll want to dust off your walking shoes if you intend to get ahead in the game. Some Pokémon will appear only in their native habitats. For example, water types might be found only near lakes and oceans.

Certain items, including Pokémon eggs, will be located at PokéStops, or places of interest such as museums and monuments.

Some real-world locations will also serve as Gyms that you can take ownership of and train your Pokémon in. You’ll be able to join one of three teams and battle an opponent’s Pokémon in their team Gym to take it over.

Niantic says it will launch an field test of the game in Japan soon. It didn’t share any updates about the Pokémon GO Plus Bluetooth-based wearable that it designed for doing things like locating and catching nearby monsters, but we can expect to hear more once the beta trials begin.
