Pandora is adding a new feature to take on competitors like Spotify and Apple Music: Thumbprint Radio.
It’s a station that’s based purely on your likes (called a ‘thumbs up’ in Pandora, hence the name), providing you with new music. Unlike other Pandora stations, Thumbprint encompasses all of your musical tastes. The station also updates its selection based on your recent music choices – every time you thumb up a song, the station will ‘update and evolve.’
That said, keep in mind you’ll need at least three stations with four liked songs in order for the feature to work.
This is the company’s own take on the highly personalized features already offered by competitors, such as Spotify’s Discover Weekly, which feeds you new music every week based on your recent tastes. Pandora emphasizes that this is not just your liked songs being played on shuffle. Although it might play some random song you loved 10 years ago, it will also include new songs you might like too.
It’s also another sign that Pandora is gearing up to fight Spotify more aggressively. Pandora recently acquired assets from Rdio in order to eventually enable its users to play songs individually instead of as part of an automated playlist.
