Nokia has announced that it will introduce support for RAW images files to the the Lumia 1020 and Lumia 1520 smartphones. Nokia tells the Verge that “the image stays totally natural,” which means that noise and other imperfections cleaned up by JPEG and other formats will be left untouched — that might not mean much to your average smartphone user but, coupled with Nokia’s focus on camera top-notch hardware and software, it opens up the potential for more serious snappers out there.

The company has also unveiled a Lytro-like ReFocus feature for its PureView devices, which is rolling out from November. There’s a sneak peak of the technology on this dedicated Nokia site.
