Nokia India ships its 500 millionth handset from Chennai

Although Nokia might be wonky on its smartphone strategy, it looks like its still doing great in the dumbphone market.

Nokia’s Chennai unit which was started in 2006, has just shipped its 500 millionth handset, thus setting quite a record for the company’s manufacturing operations both in India and globally.

Prakash Katama, director, Chennai factory operations, Nokia India said:

We have created a unique record across the world. This is not only a proud moment for us at Nokia, but a major highlight in India’s young and rising electronics manufacturing industry. This achievement only proves that with the right kind of organisation focus, employee contribution and government support, India can deliver world-class manufacturing standards and set new benchmarks.

To celebrate this occasion, Nokia will be auctioning a Nokia C3 signed by the brand ambassador Shahrukh Khan on Nokia500million.com. At the end of the auction, Nokia would match the winning bid and donate the total proceeds to a charity. The auction winner will be getting an opportunity to watch an IPL match with Shahrukh Khan and also receive the special edition phone from him.

All employees of the Chennai’s manufacturing unit will also be receiving a Nokia C3 as a gesture of appreciation.
