Nokia extends Navteq’s reach via expanded mapping deals with BMW, Mercedes and 4 others

Nokia’s Navteq mapping system is continuing to grow its visibility with automobile makers and brands after the phone-maker announced that it has agreed to extended deals with six high-profile partners.

The Finnish company has inked fresh terms with car-making giants BMW, Mercedes, Volkswagon and Hyundai, while in-car entertainment specialist Pioneer and Garmin are also in the news.

BMW and Mercedes are undoubtedly the  stellar names. BMW is turning to Nokia’s Navteq for new features and content for its maps — including enhanced visual guides and a planner that identifies the most fuel efficient routes — while Mercedes is bringing the Navteq system to the mapping products for its A-Class range.

Of the other deals, which were announced the Mondial de L’Automobile event in Paris:

  • Volkswagon is adding Nokia’s location and commerce content to its map systems
  • Hyundai is gaining more content from Navteq and has it agreed to joint marketing programmes with Nokia
  • Nokia is helping Pioneer provide map updates to its existing systems
  • Garmin is adding pedestrian and public transport routes in more than one hundred worldwide cities to its services

That’s a glut of big names and, though some of the announcements are more minor, a slew of six announcements demonstrates that Nokia’s mapping content business is coming along in the automobile space.

Indeed, the company says it powers four out of five of the industry’s fully integrated in-dash navigation systems.
